SK-II Facial Treatment Gentle Cleanser

When it comes to cleansers, I usually opt for the cheapest variant because my cheapo mentality tells me not to spend money on something you will be “washing off” in a jiffy. As I tried various cleansers from different ends of the price spectrum, it hit me: there is a difference.

In comes the SK-II Facial Treatment Gentle Cleanser:

Now this isn’t my first encounter with this product, nor the brand as Mum has been an avid SK-II user for a good 5 years now. I used certain SK-II products during my university years but strayed when I discovered the joys (or woes) of trying out different skincare products. Also, not all SK-II products I tried then agreed with my skin but that is a story for another day. ;)

Fast forward a few years later and many more skin issues later, I’m facing one of the worst problems my skin has ever had to face. Bumpy cheeks that sting when I touch them, Random clusters of spots appearing on the cheeks and forehead… It’s never been this bad.

Mum then came to the rescue and chucked aside all the other random skincare products I’ve been using and gave me a set of SK-II products, insisting I give this brand another chance. So I did as I was at wits end, as you will notice in my revamped current skincare regime page. ;)

This SK-II Facial Treatment Gentle Cleanser is my second full-sized tube, having used up the first 2-3 years ago. I remember how much I liked using it as it didn’t leave my skin feeling “squeaky clean” a.k.a “taut” unlike some other cleansers I’ve tried. I only use a pea-sized amount for my face and neck as this lathers up beautifully into a soft, bouncy cloud of foam that doesn’t pull at my already irritated skin.

This product lies on the upper end of the price range, retailing at RM209 for 120g of product but it is worth every single penny. Also, I clearly remember how long my original tube of this cleanser lasted – close to a year. Pretty value for money and you get a product that is of great quality.

Here’s the ingredient list for those interested:

Have you tried anything from SK-II and did it work for you? Although not all of their products worked for me in the past, they do now and I’m guessing it’s because I’ve…. Aged.

Dealing with Post-Travel Blues, and avoiding them as best I can!

Of late, yours truly has been bitten by the travel bug. The bug certainly bit hard as I have not been spending much time at home since coming back! Now that reality’s finally settling in, I thought I’d share how I combat post-travel blues with you.

One of the hardest-hitting downside to this is bloating, a major pain in the backside for me. I suffer from Irritated Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and the open fact that I am a glutton doesn’t help when it comes to the cramps and all! I’m rather adventurous when it comes to trying out different types of food, hence activating my IBS when I travel! What I usually do when I travel is carry some Gaviscon tablets as they help with acid reflux and Peppermint Oil capsules soothe my cramped tummy when these attacks come round.

The above two cures have been my IBS-combating heroes over the last 5 years and sometimes I even carry some Peppermint Tea Pyramids. (I only ever purchase them from Teapigs because they make the best peppermint tea in my humblest opinion)

Even with these ‘back-ups’, I still come home feeling a tad bloated and slightly puffy-looking so Mum usually makes me ginger tea, made with crushed old ginger, dried longans and red dates to give the tea a natural tinge of sweetness. Ginger helps release wind in the body (read: fart) so beware! :D it is also advised to drink this concoction in moderation or too much will make you feel a little overheated due to the spiciness of the plant. I apologise for putting the next sentence in writing but this is something that helps me loads although it sounds (and smells) less than savoury: I pass gas quite a bit after drinking this but it makes my tummy look less big and I fit into my jeans easier. ;)

Laziness unveils itself post-travel. This, paired with Mr. Procrastination easily turns me into sloth after coming home from a holiday. Pre-travel, my life’s filled with the daily grind and you somehow get used to the routine of going to work, cooking, cleaning and washing. During your holidays you then forget about all your chores and Mr. Relax comes into the picture. After not being in touch with reality for a few days (3 is enough to throw me off the hook), your holiday takes on an anti-climatic end as you come home to undone chores. These chores, paired with the fact that you probably need to head back to work the next day never fails to throw me into my usual procrastination mode.

What do we do to avoid this from happening? Sort everything out before you leave and make to-do lists before you return! For example, I love clean sheets and nothing welcomes me home more than fresh, crisp sheets on my bed. So my family always makes this a point to change our bed sheets before we leave on holiday so we come home to freshly made beds, the same way a hotel room welcomes us the first time we set foot in one. Lazy to cook? Make stews, curries or even lasagne and freeze them before you leave! This way, you will not have to cook anything from scratch when you come home and there’s always something you can quickly defrost and eat, thus slowly easing you back into your daily routine.

Another reason why the blues hit me upon coming home is… The amount of dirty laundry you accumulate post-travel. Laundry and I do not go together. I do not mind putting clothes into the wash but the sloth in my detests putting them out to dry and worse still, ironing them. The horror! If I know I will be travelling for quite a while and will be based in one place, I will usually hand wash whatever I can (blouse, undergarments) so I will not have to wash so many clothes upon return and I travel light this way. The downside? I’m always photographed wearing pretty much the same clothes, prompting remarks such as these “gosh she never changes her clothes, that stinky poo!” In actual fact, I do wash my clothes. You do not need to bring any liquid detergent, simply use the free hotel toiletries provided! ;) This is also why I usually pack light and thin items of clothing whenever I travel as they are comfortable, do not weigh a ton and dry quick! Should I be travelling somewhere chilly, I just layer on thicker clothes. Easy-peasy!

Finally, unpacking is the last thing I’d want to do when I come home. A friend once said that if she doesn’t unpack her suitcase upon arriving home, it will never be done. I agree. Although I attempt to unpack as soon as I come home, the unpacking process usually lasts 2-3 days. The items I pick out first are usually dirty laundry and toiletries. Then comes the slightly painful part: where am I going to place all these newly bought items? Smaller items such as makeup make their way up to my bedroom but the larger items such as decorative items will sit in my suitcase until I find a spot to display them.

How do you avoid this? Make room for potential new items before you leave! I have a shelf that I keep empty for this purpose just so I can get everything in my suitcase out and be able to clean and store my suitcase away before deciding on how the items will be placed around my home. This way there will be less clutter about the house.

I hope this lengthy post did not put any of you to sleep! =D Do you suffer from post-travel blues?

Cellnique Intensive Soothing and Hydrating Masque

Since I’ve somewhat been on a gel-based product roll, having reviewed Astalift’s Jelly Aquarysta Concentrate and Laniege’s Sleeping Pack, I thought I should include yet another product of a similar texture before I run out of steam. =D
In comes this Intensive Soothing and Hydrating Masque from Cellnique. I was recommended this by one of my most favourite people in the world – Stephanie of Beaute Fabuleuse whom I believe has gone through many tubes of this!

I never did expect the texture of the Intensive Soothing and Hydrating Masque to be gel-like based on the packaging of the product. I am all for pump bottles as they are more hygienic but it does take a bit more to get every single drop of product out towards the end.
Another thing that surprised me was the relatively short ingredient list. Although I’m not one who puts up the ingredient list of a product so early into my posts, I thought I’d place it here today:
Purified Water (Aqua), Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Gel, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate, Propylene Glycol, Glycerin, Carbomer, Collagen, Witch Hazel (Hamamelis Virginiana) Extract, Horse Chesnut (Aesculus Hippocastanum) Extract, Allantoin, Triethanolamine, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben.
Aloe Vera Gel, as one of the main ingredients helps to soothe irritated skin. It also acts as a water binding agent according to Cellnique and this helps deliver a soft, smooth and supple texture to the skin. Witch Hazel on the other hand acts as an astringent to aid with inflammed skin and restore the skin’s normal sensitivity threshold. Lastly, Horse Chestnut Extract balances skin circulation and helps promote clear skin!
Here’s what you should expect to see when you pump the product out of the tube;
A really pretty clear, blue gel with next to no scent at all. Application wise, I use this once to twice a week after my usual cleanse and tone routine, leave on for 10 minutes and rinse it off with water or a damp cotton pad. Yours truly favours the former method to remove the masque because I find having to dampen a cotton pad cumbersome. =D
I thought of using this as a sleeping mask as the texture of this product is extremely similar to the Laniege Water Sleeping Pack but Steph stopped me from doing so as this masque will dry your skin out should you leave it on too long!
Although both the Laniege Sleeping Pack and this Intensive Soothing and Hydrating Masque are two completely different products, I wanted to compare them in terms of texture because at first glance they look really similar!
I found the Laniege Sleeping Pack had more slip to it and didn’t leave my skin feeling dry after leaving it on too long. Then again, this is meant to be a sleeping mask, not a rinse-off mask. =p The Cellnique masque felt really watery and did not have as much slip as the Laniege Sleeping Mask. Also, this masque dries up rather quickly and should I leave it on for over 20 minutes my skin would feel taut and rather uncomfortable. So rinse this product off after 10 minutes, ladies and gents!
One way to tell if a product’s any good is by having a look at my travel kit. ;) I have been travelling a little more than I’d like to over the last month and this has found its way into my travel kit! Here’s why:
1. Packaging is user-friendly: No spills because the cap’s really sturdy and the pump dispenses quite a good amount of product. I should mention it’s travel-friendly too due to its size.
2. No mess formula: I rarely carry sheet masks or masks of any kind when I travel simply because I am sloth. This, however has changed my perception completely.
3. Non-sticky: Any product that leaves my skin feeling sticky will not sit on my dresser for long. This is why I love my gel-based products because it feels like I have not got anything on my skin at all. ;)
Execution wise, I apply 3 pumps of product all over my face and neck: this should form a thin veil over your skin. I prefer applying a thin layer to a thick one because I did not see any difference when I applied a thick layer so less is more in this case! After application my skin feels smooth and soft but I do not think this helps with the redness in my skin as promised. But then again, nothing has really helped with my skin’s redness!
This is a product I would repurchase again and again because it’s so easy to use and my skin seems to love every drop of this product so thank you Steph for introducing this to me! <3
Are you an avid mask user? Which types of mask do you normally use?

Trigger-Happy Thursdays: A Gentle Reminder!

Hello lovelies! This week’s Trigger-Happy column is pretty much a filler post because I haven’t taken that many photos over the last week to churn out a proper post. ;)

Of course, there’s always a but. =p Since coming home to sunny Malaysia, I have re-discovered the importance of a certain product:

Sunscreen! This is my current sunscreen stash, some of which are already empty. Extra brownie points to those who manage to point the empties out to me! I have been using quite a bit of sunscreen as I’ve been travelling loads, spending most of my time in a car but I do feel the heat even in a car with nicely tinted windows. Having a layer of sunscreen on my body (arms and neck, especially) has kept me pretty much burn-free for now so I thought I’d gently remind all you lovely people to wear sunscreen as to prevent your skin from ageing prematurely!

p/s: The only sunscreen I use on my face is the fantastic Shiseido Perfect UV Protector . What’s your favourite sunscreen? =)

Laniege Water Sleeping Pack EX

I thought I’d talk about more water-based products I favour since reviewing Astalift’s Jelly Aquarysta just yesterday so in comes Laniege’s Water Sleeping Pack EX!

This is a sleeping pack, which means the product is to be applied on top of your regular skincare regime right before bed.

Jump to read more about this product! :)

The first thing that hit me was the lovely blue tinge this product takes on. I don’t usually babble about colours but this one really struck a chord in me and the fresh scent that accompanies the Water Sleeping Pack seems to go very well with the colour as there is a light fresh scent to it. Some may wonder if a fresh scent would awaken one’s senses rather than lull one to sleep but fret not, the smell dissipates quickly. As quickly as this light product sinks into the skin, I may add.

I’m going to keep this short and simple as I believe there are many reviews on this product out there but I wanted to talk about this too because this product is the first, and only Korean skincare product I have tried so far (BB creams don’t count as skincare hehe) and I have enjoyed using this quite a bit!

Laniege says to use this once or twice a week as an overnight treatment but this is light enough to be used every night, which is what I do. Non-sticky and absorbs quickly into my skin without making a mess on my pillow, this product is a keeper and its affordable price tag at RM100 / £20 for 80ml of product helps loads!

On lazy nights I only apply this instead of my regular skincare regime and I still wake up with hydrated skin. Should I hit the hay sans any skincare product on my face, I usually wake up to tight-feeling skin as I sleep in an air-conditioner environment. However, I do not recommend you follow in the footsteps of this lazy blogger so please apply this on top of your usual skincare routine!

Having used this during UK’s dry winter months, this has definitely helped re-hydrate my skin after spending a day out in the cold and coming home to a warm, heated home that also contributes to the drying of my skin. Using the Water Sleeping Pack helped tremendously during then and I really noticed a difference: my skin was glowing as opposed to being dull as it would normally be.

I was also pleasantly surprised with this product as my reactive skin did not react badly to this product so mega plus points for this. Highly recommended to everyone who wants that extra moisture boost! :)

Astalift Jelly Aquarysta Rejuvenating Concentrate

As I’m fast approaching my mid-twenties, I thought it’s high time I looked into some anti-ageing skincare as having crows feet and laugh lines is the last thing I’d want to have before I hit 30. It doesn’t help that Paul’s the same age as I am, resulting in a bit of teasing from friends and family who mention men age slower than women. Hence, it’s likely that I will look older than he does before I know it!

In comes this product that promises to target the premature visible signs of ageing and much more:

In theory, this product ticks all the right boxes for me. Read on to find out more!

Astalift is a brand developed by Fujifilm who have built up a wealth of technologies catering towards film photo imaging. Astaxanthin, a natural antioxidant is prevalent in all Astalift products and this regulates cytokine levels during the production of melanin and inhibits excessive melanin production. This is to say that the antioxidant shields the skin from the harmful effects of the environment, as mentioned on the Astalift website.

The Jelly Aquarysta is said to deliver visibly younger, luminous and ‘replumped’ skin. Sounds great to me! What’s even better is its jelly-like texture. I usually use my baby finger to pick up a small amount:

I favour my clean finger over the spatula that comes in the box because I find the latter picks up too much product. With my finger, I only need to tap lightly on the surface of the product and I get the perfect amount for my face.

Here’s a close up on the texture of the product, swatched on my arm:

A jellied texture that turns watery when massaged onto the skin! I favour light, watery serums that absorb quickly so this ticks all the right boxes in terms of texture.

Application wise, I find that my skin feels slightly taut after but it’s nothing uncomfortable / unbearable. I have been using this on and off since, using it 3 weeks in a row and then abandoned it for a while as my skin erupted like no tomorrow. I picked it up again a few days ago and discovered that some product had somewhat evaporated, leaving me with less than a quarter of a tub of product! :s I distinctly remember having at least half a tub of Jelly left a month ago so I was rather surprised to find that the level of the product had sunk, prompting me to review it. :p

Does it perform? Yes and no. My skin was noticably smoother but I felt that this also made my cheeks a tad dry and I had to apply more moisturiser to my cheeks to stop them from feeling tight. Other than that I did not experience any miracles but then again I am lucky to not suffer from any fine lines or pigmentation yet. *touches wood*

Even though the Jelly Aquarysta can be used as preventive care, I found that it did not do that much for me to garner a second purchase but this has a place in my book of good skincare products to use when my skin matures a little more.

An interesting fact I noted about this lovely jelly is that it always looks new! Here’s what it looks like after dipping my finger into the tub:

See the dent in the tub? This dent disappears after a few seconds, revealing a smooth surface again:

Tadah! This may sound a tad crazy but this is why I liked using the product so much as I felt as though I was dipping into a brand new product every single time I applied this. :p

Have you tried this? Do you use anti-ageing skincare and do they work for you? Let me know!

Trigger-Happy Thursdays: Foodie Getaways! =D

I have been gorging myself a little too much lately so this week’s column will mostly be about food! =D Two weeks ago, we headed up to Genting Highlands for some cool air and Dim Sum, one of my many favourite foods:

My birthday clutch is seen in the foreground as I took it to show the boyfriend this pretty clutch is going places! =D

Speaking of going places…..

We have been going places thanks to my brother’s professional driving skills! I’ve been spending the last week in Ipoh, meeting up with Lily who kindly played tour guide and even presented me with two beautiful birthday gifts that I’ve been wearing everyday since receiving them:

Lily’s fab at selecting lip colours and I’ve never been happier as I have never owned anything from Dior so having two different lippies from the brand made me hyperventilate quite a bit. Thank you dear!

Since we were around the area, we dropped by Lumut for the day and stumbled upon this homemade noodle shop:

Then there’s the bubble tea craze that has not died out yet! This is old news but I was hanging around KLCC one day and we found a new Bubble tea shop. They had an opening offer where a glass of bubble tea only costs RM2. Naturally, I jumped at the offer!

Final random photo of the day. Also in Lumut, we found a Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia (a convenience store catered to the citizens of Malaysia) and I couldn’t help but giggle at the packaging:

We walked out empty handed. ;) Have you been to any of these stores?

Also, we have a winner for my little giveaway! The gift goes to Gin so congratulations Gin! <3

September Favourites!

Hiya! It’s nearing mid-October and I am just about to churn out my September favourites post. Oops! Still, I hope this post is better late than never. ;)

Since coming home, I have discovered my foundations are all a tad too dark for me which turned into a major nightmare as my skin has been misbehaving a little too much lately. I really needed the coverage so I had to turn to quite a few concealers to help conceal those eye sacks and blemishes. Naturally, some of these concealers made the list!

First up, Rimmel’s Wake Me Up Concealer:

This was purchased as part of a last minute mad dash in Boots at London’s Heathrow Airport. Seeing there was a £3 off offer, hence bringing the cost down to a rather affordable £3.99. I bit the bullet, chose the lightest shade (Ivory) and whipped out my Boots Advantage card even though I have not swatched the product beforehand! This creamy concealer works a treat when it comes to concealing my eye sacks but sadly doesn’t perform as well when it comes to those angry red zits of mine. However, it still works well as an all-in-one concealer so it sits permanently in my travel makeup kit. Colour wise it is just a little dark for me but nothing a light dusting of powder combined with my Meteorites can’t help!

The next favourite, an under-eye concealer I doubt I can ever live without:

My Creme de La Mer The Radiant Concealer in Light. Let’s start with that ugly nick right at the top of the concealer.

I was applying the concealer one morning in my room when my brother thought it would be funny to barge into my room and greet me with a massive

‘BOOYAH!’

that made me jump, resulting in me digging into my then-pretty pot of concealer with my fingernail.

Boy oh boy did he get into a load of trouble for doing that to me! This concealer blends like a dream, doesn’t settle into fine lines and matches my skintone perfectly. Only downside is the hefty price tag and the fact that this is unavailable in Malaysia. T__T

Now for some colour in this post! =D I have been absolutely loving this Kate eyeshadow palette in BR-2 thanks to Steph and her awesome taste:

A lovely, shimmery neutral palette (three colours on the right) that can be worn from day to night! I am slightly wary of the white shade as the glitter is a tad chunky so that goes onto the inner corner of my eyes when I want to look a little more awake! Other than that this is a versatile and travel-friendly palette! Yet another item that has been sitting in my travel makeup bag over the last month!

Actually, I noticed that most of this month’s favourite products come from my travel makeup bag. =)

Yet another Rimmel gem which made its way into my September Favourites is this simple-looking item:

The Stay Matte Pressed Powder doesn’t break the bank at £3.99 (approximately RM20) with its minimalist and lightweight packaging. I own the Transparent version as I only use this to lightly set concealed areas, or the entire face should I be using foundation or BB cream. I usually favour my Dior Nude Natural Glow Sculpting Powder when it comes to travelling but for some reason this has been in my makeup bag for the last month and I have been reaching out for this ever so often! Having a generous 14g worth of product in the pan means this will last me quite a while. =)

One always needs something to combat ‘em evil breakouts. I found a product that seems to work well for me:

Dr. Sebagh’s Breakout Spot-On Blemish Corrector is one product that reduces the redness in my zits not long after application. It then takes 2-3 days for the zit to dry up and heal. What sets this apart from the other zit-busting products is that this one does not sting my skin even when applied onto raw, just-popped zits. Mega plus points for this one!

That’s all for my September Favourites but I have one little bonus photo to share with you! I had my hair done just yesterday (which was a nightmare) and the end result was a little too light for my liking. The photos I took all turned out redder than it looks! In real life it takes on a really yellowish-blonde shade, which does upset me severely as I specifically said I did not want to go light.

T__T

I really don’t know! Even Mum agreed that this colour looks too light and ‘improper’ but pray tell me what all of you think, pretty please! Should I rush out to the nearest drugstore and re-colour my hair?

>.<

Here it is!

Yikes!!! +___+

Review: Cellnique Soothing & Hydrating Lotion

Instead of doing my September Empties or Favourites (which will be coming up), I thought I’d share with you one very important item in my skincare routine that I’ve really enjoyed using ever since I received it in the post thanks to a swap I did with Steph more than two months ago!

I have not tried anything from Cellnique which is a Malaysian brand usually sold in beauty salons so I was really excited (and a tad nervous) about trying it out as I have extremely reactive skin. However, Steph kindly reassured me and says that this has been her go-to toner / lotion for quite a few years so I bravely took the plunge!

In comes this Soothing and Hydrating Lotion which is housed in a plastic spray bottle that holds 200ml of product:

Simple, rather clinical-looking packaging that doesn’t garner much attention but the product has a lot for me to shout about!

According to Cellnique, this lotion contains 14 types of plant extracts which include Witch Hazel, Calendula and Lemon to name a few. Ginger Root Extract seems to be the main plant extract in this product as the lotion itself smells strongly of Ginger! Not great for those who do not fancy the scent. ;)

Marketed as a product that calms down skin that’s prone to sensitivity, this helps to refresh tired skin and replenish moisture.

Firstly, this stings if any product gets into your eyes so be careful when spritzing this onto your face! I usually use between two 2-3 spritzes, pat the lotion into the skin before following up with a hydrating toner. I suppose this can be used as a toner alone but I prefer using this to prep my skin as I find this helps my skin absorb other products eg. serum and moisturiser better!

This product has since replaced my trusted Thermal Water spritzes and I lugged this bottle back from abroad, which is saying something as I do not usually lug big bottles of skincare products back due to weight (and space) restriction. Also, I have been travelling about quite a bit as you would know should you follow me on Twitter and this product has been going places with me! I find this soothes my skin better than the Caudalie Beauty Elixir and my skin feels comforted after a hot day even though Ginger does sound like a spicy product, not a cooling one!

According to information found on Cellnique’s website, Ginger Root Extract can increase skin’s radiance and decrease inflammation that may contribute to acne and psoriasis. This ingredient also promotes smoothness and evenness in skin tone, something I believe everyone wants to achieve. ;)

Will I repurchase this product? Yes I will, only if it is wallet-friendly. I have a feeling this must have cost Steph quite a bit! Thanks very much for this lovely product my dear!

I’ve been liking these spritz-on lotions since coming home as it’s been really humid and uncomfortable which has turned my skin into a reactive minefield. By the way, I am aware I have not chosen a winner for my little thank you giveaway yet but I will do soon, do bear with me as I have been away but I will do my best to contact the winner as soon as possible and send the gift out as soon as I get home!

Thank you for staying with me, lovelies! <3

Bringing out the nerdier side of me with these sturdy frames from Firmoo Glasses!

Glasses have played a huge role in my life and I am rarely in contact lenses. However, I have always played it safe in terms of frame selection: regular half-rimmed / rimless glasses have adorned my face for the last 14 years and I usually go for small rectangular frames, avoiding the larger, more adventurous-looking lenses.

When Firmoo offered me the chance to review a pair of glasses, I happily selected a pair that looked something like this:

Black framed glasses are certainly a first for me and I was rather apprehensive about wearing them when they arrived. Firmoo provides the wearer with both a hard and soft case with a really soft cleaning cloth which feels as if it’s made out of suede.

Before I go any further, this may be of interest to those of you four-eyed lovelies (like me!) Firmoo offers a free pair of glasses for first time buyers:

You only pay for shipping costs, which is amazing so do check out this link to find out more! Do note that they are currently upgrading their system but the Free Glasses program will resume on October 7th! =)

Also, what I think sets Firmoo apart from other online glasses retailers is their cool virtual “try-on” application where you can upload a passport-sized photo of yourself and place various frames on your face to see if it fits! I spent a good hour (perhaps more) on the website thanks to this app as I had many a laugh at myself when I tried on frames that didn’t suit my fat, long-ish face! =D

Delivery was prompt and I received my glasses within 10 working days, as promised and the glasses were well wrapped with bubble wrap and placed in a padded envelope as to protect them from being damaged.

The end result? A nerdy me! Note that I only have minimal eye makeup on and I’ve decided to go bare faced for this look so feast your eyes on all those blemishes! ;)

I found the frame to be slightly heavier than what I’m used to but it is not unbearable. The family had a good laugh when they saw me in them and I have since been wearing them around and make a rather cute accessory. What do you think? =)

Many thanks, Firmoo for taking me out of my comfort zone! =D
