Trigger-Happy Thursday: Birthday Celebration at Fraser’s Hill and a little giveaway!

I turned 24 not too long ago (the day in question falls on a certain public holiday in Malaysia ;) and my awesome parents decided to organise a cosy birthday celebration with some family and friends!

This is going to be a photo-heavy post as one of my best mates, Kean Ho took many great photos with his DSLR! Paired with my Olympus and some great shots from Bernard’s Samsung S3, I happily present you one of my longest Trigger-Happy posts yet! Also more intimate as I reveal a thing or two about my family!

The venue? A gorgeous Bungalow in the depths of Fraser’s Hill:

We arrived in the afternoon on the 15th of September which happens to be Dad’s birthday and Paul’s* sister T and F joined us soon after! Feeling peckish, we trudged a little way downhill for some Banana Fritters, or Pisang Goreng as we locals call it.

Here’s the stall where we bought a huge bag of Pisang Goreng with two combs of Pisang Raja (king of bananas when translated literally)

Us happily munching on freshly fried Pisang Goreng!

The rest of Paul’s* family members then joined us a little later and we had a bit of fun playing with baby Edward, Paul’s* other sister’s baby boy!

Having fun on the seesaw with Edward, Z, Paul* on one end, B the daddy on the other and Edward’s grandmama looking on adoringly in the background!

Now who says seesaws are only for kids?

Watching Dad and Paul’s* Dad playing on the seesaw was pretty much the highlight of the trip as all of us watching from the distance broke out into guffaws of laughter. Much credit goes to Kean Ho who rushed to take this paparazzi-esque shot of the two men. They immediately got up in embarrassment when they realised they were being watched. =D

Then there’s Mummy on the swing, proving my parents are very much young at heart:

The look on Mum’s face immortalised in this shot? Priceless. ;)

The next day, Mum decided to keep us ‘kids’ quiet with some Paint-it-Yourself kits. For once in my life, I could paint! Never an artistic person, I had help from my artsy fartsy Dad when it came to Art projects for school.. During exams, I even had help from a creative friend who would sneakily help me put in strokes of paint here and there, camouflaging the ugliness in my artwork.

+___+

So the four big kids: Paul*, T, F and I sat down first thing in the morning and started painting!

Numbers are placed on the canvas so all you need to do is paint according to the numbers stated. Easy! =D If I can do this, everyone can!

As the weather was lovely, Mum then shoo-ed us out of the home and asked us to rent some bicycles and cycle about. The men – B and F were extremely gung ho about it and pedalled with great ease whereas T and I huffed and puffed behind. Paul* tagged along behind us girls as he was worried we’d get left behind. The two gung ho men constantly stopped and made U-turns as we girls were simply too….. delicate to cycle as quickly as them boys! I admit I am most unfit and have no stamina.

Us cyclists at the town centre where we rented our bikes!

The gung ho boys:

The bike pusher a.k.a me:

T and I!

“I’ve filled my exercise quota for a year” – quips T. I highly second that!

Lunch came and went and it was time for tea! Here’s a rare photo of me posing with a peace sign for your viewing pleasure:

Mummy painstakingly made many a bite-sized delicacy for all us to much on. I have the best Mummy in the world. Something rather unsavoury struck us the day before we left for Fraser’s Hill in which we nearly cancelled this getaway but Mum decided to carry on with this trip as she didn’t want to let everyone down. <3 Best parents in the world, I have!

Lettuce, half a quail egg, some mayonaise and shrimps topped on wholemeal bread with homemade cheese tarts followed by cucumber and mint finger sandwiches.

Homemade Madeleines and Cream Puffs with The Loaf’s Chocolate Croissants and Cranberry Cheese erm.. bread?

Now that we are talking about food, allow me to introduce you to a smashingly delicious yet simple dessert: Sago Pudding

Topped with evaporated milk and Gula Melaka (palm sugar), this makes such an enjoyable dessert, made by housekeeper and family friend Annie. I helped myself to 4 helpings of this and I couldn’t breathe after. #glutton
It was then time to blow out the lone candle on my cake! I’m incredibly blessed to be surrounded with such happy, loving people.
Paul’s family presented me with a lovely, lovely gift:

After carefully undoing the ribbon, this greeted me:

My first item from Coach! A lovely clutch which doubles up as a purse. Am incredibly touched by their generous gesture. <3 Thank you!

T and F then had to leave us after tea as F’s birthday comes up on the following day so Mum got some empty containers for them to bring downhill. A candid moment with them and the two Mummies here:

Then it’s bye bye T and F!
In order to counter our food baby (bulging tummies), the rest of us decided to head out for a walk.
The brother, Mum and I then decided to pose for a photo at the end of our cul de sac.

No, that’s not where we stayed. ;)

Baby Edward was feverish so he, Auntie and Z decided to head back to the bungalow whereas the rest of us conquered the Hemmant Trail:

Shot taken by Kean Ho. The designated photographer of the trip. Here’s another one, which is my personal favourite:

Here’s my take on trying to be creative, taking a shot of Kean Ho and Dad. ;)

We came home to a certain someone peeking out at us from the window!

Edward’s one happy baby! Here’s another with his grandpapa

And one with Paul and I. =)

Before we knew it, it was dinner time! All of our meals sans high tea were prepared by Annie. =)

Since it’s mid-autumn, we headed out to play with lanterns and… Sparklers!
Uncle proves he is still very much young at heart. ;)

Whereas the rest of us just posed. All these following photos were shot with Kean Ho’s amazing camera as I didn’t know how to fiddle about with my camera’s settings to take night shots! Mum and bro were posing and I just had to photobomb their shot!

Mummy playing with her god-grandchild – Aini and her Mum who joined us for an evening of fun!

What’s a family get-together without one for the album?

And one with the petite Aini who didn’t look too pleased to be photographed. Oops!

Z, B, Edward and Auntie!

After spending two lovely nights at Fraser’s Hill, it was time to bad it farewell. =( It’s time to pack up!
Our getaway then ended with a shot of everyone who made this a trip to remember:
I have been sporting a rather bare face during this trip, using minimum makeup (mostly concealer, powder and sheer, shimmery eyeshadow) as my skin has once again decided to erupt on me. =( Also, Mum pointed out that I’m not using the correct foundation shade for my skintone and that all of my foundations bar my YSL Touché Eclat Foundation sample in B10 is too dark for me. Imagine my horror when I discovered even my trusty Bourjois foundations are a tad dark for me! T___T
I am hoping I will tan a little more since I’m home now or I’ll need to lookout for paler foundations! O.o Please put forward any recommandations as I do need foundation to even out the redness on my face!

If you have managed to read this far, congratulations and thank you very much for being such a loyal reader! <3 In conjunction with my birthday celebration and this lengthy post, I have decided to giveaway one MUA Undressed Palette and a Bourjois Effet 3D Lipgloss in the shade 52 (I think, I forgot to photograph the shade number and I'm currently away from home!) to one lucky reader!

To win, all you need to do is follow me on GFC / Bloglovin’ / E-mail and tell me what is it you love about my blog and what would you like me to feature more in the future! This giveaway will end on the 7th of October at 11.59pm Malaysian time. You can tweet about this giveaway if you like but it isn’t compulsory!

To round up this post, the giveaway is international but do remember to read the rules before entering! ;)

Thank you all for being such lovely readers and for bearing with me while I randomly go on long, unexplained nor announced absences but I will be back soon! <3

Saturday Meme: 5 Favourite Blogs!

Hello everyone!! I’m back for a little while, from an otherwise unexpected hiatus. Been having a little bit of trouble with the internet connection at home and I haven’t quite settled down just yet so I am currently blogging from one of my favourite Taiwanese tea houses – Par Tea Time at SS15, Subang Jaya. Also, last week’s Saturday Meme was scheduled on my iPad but for some reason it not only did not go up on the blog, it disappeared from my blogging app so please forgive me for disappearing unannounced!

This week’s Saturday Meme features 5 favourite blogs of mine, as suggested (as usual) by the beautiful Stephanie of Beaute Fabuleuse. I shall fire this post off by presenting you one blog I read everyday:

1. Worship at the House of Blues

I have been reading Yasumi’s blog for over 3 years now and her blog is such a breath of fresh air. She writes of little things that may seem queer to some but I have always been intrigued with the way dear Yasumi presents her view on stuff that may not matter much to others but are dear to her heart. Her aptly titled as well as well-written posts are another reason as to why I enjoy reading her blog so much. Follow her if you haven’t done so already! =D

Psst, if you don’t know this already, allow me to refresh your memory again! Yasumi is the mastermind behind this amazing shop called The Fushigi Shop and please do visit often as updates are aplenty and there is always something for everyone!

2. My Women Stuff

Another blog I read on a daily basis! If you are looking for the latest updates in the beauty world, look no further as Paris B is here to help! With her thoroughly written product reviews and musings on beauty related issues, this is not one beauty blog to overlook should you be a beauty product junkie like I am!

3. ChloeAsh

Lily of ChloeAsh blogs every other day and again, this is one of the blogs I read ever so often! Lily’s tongue-in-cheek posts often put a smile on my face and I do sometimes giggle out loud when reading her posts in the library, gaining myself a few evil stares from fellow uni mates. Oops!

4. The Beauty Sample

Becca not only writes thoroughly, every photograph on her blog is worthy of many words by itself! I find much pleasure in reading her blog as I am a sucker for beautifully taken photos. If you ever need a swatch photo, look Becca’s blog up as she takes many photos of a product under different light to give you a better idea on what the colour of the product’s like. Highly recommended!

5. Simone Loves Makeup

Simone is an Irish makeup artist living in the Middle East and I was first introduced to her by a friend of mine who wears the prettiest eye makeup. She then informed me that she learnt how to do her eye makeup thanks to watching many a video filmed by the talented Simone! I follow her blog more than watch her videos because reading is something I enjoy more than watching makeup tutorials on YouTube because I have a rather short attention span.

Of course, I have more than 5 favourite blogs and it is no surprise that in one way or other, all these blogs are beauty blogs! These five blogs are special in their own way and I like reading them for different reasons so I thought I’d just share with you these ones out of the many blogs I read everyday! <3

Last but not least, special mention always goes to my partner in crime – Stephanie of

Beaute Fabuleuse

Need I say anymore? ;) Do look up her take on her 5 favourite blogs and do not forget to follow her! =D

Happy Saturday everyone! Regular blogging will take place when the internet connection at home gets sorted out and I get myself a data plan on my mobile phone! Much love to everyone and I hope all of you are well!

Delayed Saturday Meme: Travel Essentials!

Hello everyone!! Do pardon me for this very late Saturday Meme! This week, Steph thought we both should do a Travel Essentials post as we are doing a bit of travelling these days. Steph frequently commutes between Kuala Lumpur and Labuan so we thought it apt to do a post like this just to feature some of our must-haves when we travel!

A bit of insight before I proceed: I have flying. I am claustrophobic, so being trapped in an aircraft for over 10 hours if I fly directly from London – Kuala Lumpur kills me. With that, I rather split the journey into two flights, hence a stopover in Dubai most of the time because Emirates gives you a generous 30kg worth of baggage allowance.

I digress. I will not be talking about the absolute essentials eg. Toothbrush / skincare but these are a few things that I find to be extremely helpful when you have a long flight ahead of you! Do hop along to find out more!

1. Eye mask

This is an absolute must-have for me when travelling. Even though I can’t sleep on planes I find blacking your eyes out (lol) helps you rest a little more. This is lavender eye mask I purchased from Holistic Silk. It is pricier than your average eye mask but this wears really comfortably and the lavender scent isn’t too overpowering. I’ve had this for 5 months now and the lavender scent hasn’t worn off yet.

2. Hand Sanitiser

This is so important and I never go anywhere without a small tube / bottle of hand sanitiser as you never know when you need this! I need it especially on flights so I do not need to get out of my seat to wash my hands in the loo (you know what the queues can be like) during meal times on the plane!

3. Lip Balm / Multi-purpose salve

Yet another flight must-have. I think this is becoming more of a flight essentials than anything else. :D . But yes. I have my Creme de La Mer lip balm with me because it doesn’t come in a tube (which I will then need to squeeze into a small clear plastic bag together with my skincare essentials) and this works on both my lips and cuticles / hands! Perhaps it’s due to my frequent toilet visits (I need to do them because I get really fidgety when sitting in a plane for too long) and the hand wash seems extra drying but this lip balm keeps both my lips and hands in check.

4. Optrex Actimist for Dry + Irritated eyes

This is a relatively new addition to my little travel kit! My eyes often go bloodshot due to the lack of sleep, dry cabin air and one too many films from the little screen in front of my seat and this helps me look less haggard / bloodshot during transit or when meeting the family at the airport. The great thing about this product is that you do not need to drip it into your eyes, just spray onto closed eyelids and you are good to go. I have no idea how this works but ladies and gents, this does work. It lasts for up to 6 months once opened as opposed to your regular eye drops that need to be discarded after one month.

5. Bach’s Rescue Remedy Spray

Another product that I wished I discovered earlier! As mentioned earlier, I am no fan of long haul flights and sometimes turbulence in air does agitate me as I am a naturally anxious person. ;) I worry too much. A good friend recommended I give this a go as she too is a panicky person like I am. Made out of a blend of naturally calming extracts, simply spritz 2 pumps onto your tongue and let it do the work! I find this calms me down a considerable bit and having it taste like wine makes it a winner for me!

These are the little things I carry with me during trips! Do share yours with me! ;) Check out Steph’s post here if you haven’t done so already and excuse me for sounding slightly incoherent as I had to re-write this post and I am feeling rather jet lagged at the moment. :s see you all soon and have a lovely day wherever you are!

Trigger-Happy Thursdays: Of the Grotesque

I’ve been seeing strange things in the sky! I call it the Theatre of the Grotesque. Queer, distorted shapes the clouds form but perhaps I’m only seeing them now as my mind is muddled up in a bizarred way.

I’m still packing, have got a couple of days left in this country I’ve called home for the last five years. Where life takes me next, i do not know but it is incredibly comforting to know that I’ve got supportive readers like you. So thank you very much for sticking with me and I have a few surprises coming up seeing it is my birthday month!

Also, it happens to be Stephanie’s birthday today!!! Go wish her a very Happy Birthday now! <3

It may be disconcerting for me to end this week’s Trigger-Happy column with this image but seeing it’s Grotesque week this week here goes:

Tell me what you think of it and I’ll tell you mine! ;)

Happy Thursday!

Good quality and value glasses with Select Specs!

I’ve been labelled a ‘four-eyed monster’ since the tender age of 10 as I love my books but neglected my eyesight in the process of reading to my heart’s content. Contact lenses don’t cut it for me as they irritate my sensitive eyes so you would usually see me out and about in glasses!

Imagine my glee when I was offered the chance to receive a pair of prescription glasses from the lovely people at Select Specs! =D Being able to choose a pair of spectacles from the economy range where prices go up to £22.50 for a pair, I jumped on this rimless pair as I have always loved rimless glasses but they cost over £100 here in the UK.

For £14.95, you do not only get your prescription glasses but it comes with UV, anti-reflection and anti-scratch coating. As rimless glasses look better with thin and light lenses this came with the package too. Imagine paying only £14.95 as opposed to paying easily 5 times more at a high street store. Postage costs £4 to anywhere in the world which brings the total to under £20 / MYR100. What a bargain!

It took approximately 10 days for the glasses to arrive and they came in a sleek hard capsule-like casing with a cleaning cloth that doubles up as a soft pouch for the glasses:

A simple shot of the glasses do no justice to how pretty it looks on me so here you go, a FOTD with me wearing my spanking new glasses! =D

At Select Specs, prices start from £6 for a pair of prescription glasses under their Value collection and they even do designer glasses too so the next time you are thinking of getting a new pair of glasses or even sunglasses, hop over to their website before hitting the shops as there are many bargains to be had!

On a side note, I’m wearing Smashbox’s Limitless Lip Stain and Colour Seal Balm in the shade Sangria, which is a gift from Steph <3

What do you think of the look? =)

A Little August Favourites post!

Once again, I’m in my frenzied packing mode. Hopefully for the last time. In the midst of all the madness, I have found a few items to be particularly calming so I thought I’d share them with you. Also, I figured I shall call this my August favourites post as they have brought a lot of joy and cheer into my life.

Firstly, I’m a true lover of anything handmade. I’m such a sucker that if you want to con me into purchasing something, just say it’s handmade and I’ll be all over the item. I would like to think that I befriended Yasumi, the mastermind behind the beautifully quirky The Fushigi Shop where she creates beautiful, ‘shiny fings’ as she calls it. She also ventures into something really close to my heart… stationery so I grabbed two of her beautifully made notebooks for £1.99 each:

Note the happy kettle and teapot! Yasumi hand-carved the stamps and I just think she’s just incredibly gifted and patient, I must say for I am one who cannot be arsed to sit down and do something for hours at an end. I have yet to scribble in these beauties but I put them on my desk and will just flip through the pristine lined pages when I feel extremely stressed out (which I have been doing a lot lately) as I am pretty much venturing into the unknown.

Here’s a closer shot of the happy kettle and teacup!

Beautifully made! Yasumi also blogs at Worship Blues in which I stalk on a daily basis. Or should I say, worship on a daily basis. ;)

With this being a predominantly beauty blog, with great pleasure I present you with my Holy Grail concealer…..

I foresee many happy days with this, sans eye sacks and unsightly blemishes. Funnily enough, I absolutely adore the tiny brush that comes with this. Allow me to experiment further with this concealer before I present you with a full on review! ;)

I received a pair of glasses from Select Specs over a week ago but they were too pretty to wear!! I love rimless glasses as they make me feel as though I’m not wearing glasses at all and they feel really light and comfortable! I shall leave you with a cheeky shot of the said pair now and a proper review will be coming up soon! =D

What’s an August Favourite post without base makeup! I finally tried out the famed Liz Earle’s Sheer Skin Tint and even though coverage isn’t that great, I love the finish this Skin Tint provides!

Absolute love! I wonder how this will fare back in humid Malaysia as the finish is rather dewy. I suppose I’ll need more than just a dusting of my trusty Meteorites when using this at home.

What are your August favourites? I would love to hear from you! xxx

Saturday Meme: 5 Pet Peeves

Hello hello! I’m sorry I couldn’t post yesterday as the Internet connection at home and on my phone got cut off all of a sudden! Am very, very glad the connection’s back today *phew*

This Saturday, the lovely Steph and I will bring you the FIVE pet peeves that really get on our nerves. =D

Happy reading!!

1. Putting a knife into one’s mouth when eating.

This takes the top spot because I simply cannot understand why anyone would want to put a sharp object into their mouth. Never fails to make me cringe everytime I see someone do that. Ugh.

2. Using my belongings without asking for permission beforehand

Oh yes, this does get on my nerves too. I am more than happy to share anything of mine with everyone… As long as you ask. Living away from home has taught me patience and tolerance but should I say, come to the kitchen in search of my mug to make a hot drink and discover it’s not there, that would really piss me off. Don’t mess with me.

3. Dishes in the sink left overnight (maybe more)

Arrgh! Simply typing this out makes my blood boil. Imagine the amount of bacteria that would be breeding on those dishes! Worse still, if some of those dishes are mine and you did not bother asking if you can use them beforehand. Major pet peeve.

4. Cutting queue

Sad to say, this is something a lot of Malaysians do. Whenever I see someone do so I would put on the best b!tch face I can muster and tell them

‘Excuse me, the queue starts there’ *points to the back*

I don’t understand this! Everyone’s waiting patiently in line so WAIT FOR YOUR TURN! *roars*

5. Not adhering to the dress code

I have attended many events that require a certain dress code. It does get on my nerves when some people have the cheek to come decked in jeans, trainers and a regular t-shirt even though the dress code states smart casual. Imagine my glee when they get told off by ushers and are not allowed into the concert hall. Yep, am talking about concerts at my favourite concert hall in Malaysia – The Petronas Philharmonic Hall. If I were to get married, the dress code would be ‘Black Tie’ and if my guests do not adhere to it, sorry you are out. =p

I could go on and on but it’s best I stop here and usher all of you to Beaute Fabuleuse and check out what sets Stephanie off! ;)

Happy Saturday! xxx
