Calming Aromatherapy Products: Neal’s Yard Remedies’ Calming Candle and Room Spray

Have you ever suffered from sleepless nights? This has been a problem for me for a good 4-5 weeks now and I have been desperately trying to rectify this problem. My family’s been a firm believer of aromatherapy products where there’s almost always incense / scented candles burning in our home to ‘set the mood’.

I first stumbled upon Neal’s Yard Remedies’ (NYR) Aromatherapy range last November while shopping at Westfield Stratford when the bf and I walked past NYR and we both turned back thanks to the lovely scent that wafted from the shop! It wasn’t the kind of the ‘in your face’ scent you get when walking past LUSH shops but it was a subtle mix of scents that drew us in!

NYR were then promoting their (then) new fragrance – Pure Essence Eau de Parfum No.1 – Frankincense which the bf bought for his grandma but what drew me in was their Aromatherapy candles. I have a huge thing for scented candles, especially Diptyque ones but they do cost quite a bit! The bf then decided to treat me to NYR’s Calming aromatherapy candle!

Fast forward 7 months later, I found the Calming Aromatherapy Room Spray on offer at Fenwick’s and I thought it would compliment my candle which is down to its last legs.

Neal’s Yard Remedies’ candles are handmade by a traditional candle-maker on a farm on the north coast of Cornwall. I’m all for locally made produce so yay for that! On top of that, the wax used is a 100% organic blend of beeswax and botanical wax which is great as this means I will not be inhaling toxins when as the candle burns. Pure aromatherapy essential oil blends are infused into the wax before being hand poured. Burn time for these candles are approximately 60 hours as stated on the box.

Consisting of mainly soothing rose and geranium essential oils, I love the subtle rose scent mingled with a hint of geranium. NYR’s rose scented products with L’occitane’s are my favourite go-to brand for rose scented products as the rose scent isn’t too overpowering / synthetic smelling. Instead, you get a fresh, calming scent with a tinge of grass which transports me to a field filled with lavender and roses. I have no idea why I associate ‘calm’ scents with lavender but I’m a huge lavender scent and the above packaging takes on purple hues which keeps making me think there’s lavender somewhere in the ingredient list but there’s no lavender at all in the Calming range.

I especially love burning candles in the evening just before bedtime when I’m reading a book. I usually place candles on my bedside table as I love to glance at the flickering flame every now and then (okay it also shows I’ve got a short attention span =p ) and the scent never fails to gently usher me to bed. I call this my bedtime drug =D

With the spray, I use it for the times when I’m too lazy to light the candle as it instantly refreshes the room with a few spritzes. It takes a while for the scent to surface when I’m using the candle but the spray’s great for quick pick-me-ups, or calm-me-down-now times when I really need it. Housed in NYR’s signature blue glass bottles (which looks and feels really luxurious when held), this is also kept on my bedside table as I love to spritz it in the air before the lights go out as I think I’m addicted to the scent. 😉

Do you need both products? Well, as much as they compliment each other, I wouldn’t say you need them both. However, I find the scent lingers in my room a lot longer after I’ve used the candle but with the room spray you get an instant burst of fragrance. I have friends who love lighting candles but then forget to put them out, making this a fire hazard so if you may be one of these people who have the tendency to forget, the room spray is a good alternative.
